Home of the famous Maria Martinez, San Ildefonso is known for the black-on-black painted pottery she created. The black color is achieved by smothering the fire with manure and allowing the smoke to permeate the naturally red pottery. Maria's son Popovi created sienna-on-black, where the black is burned away after firing, allowing the red clay to show through. Painted polychrome pottery, which was the norm before the fame of Maria's blackware, was revived by Blue Corn and is still produced today.
